Hi Graham,
I am sending you this e-mail as my father (Douglas Fleming) was the deputy head brewer at Hewitt's and as a child I spent quite some time in the Tower Brewery with my father. He was also the man who closed the brewery down when it was bought by Bass Charrington. Barry Peacock was the head brewer and he had poor eyesight, thus he was nicknamed Batman (as blind as a bat). His wife's name was Robin! Robin Peacock, what a name!
If you want to know more get in touch.
Take care,
Colin Fleming

My mother was a Kennington and her family through Charles Kennington were importers of Wine and Spirits in the late 1800's in this area. I note that on the ouside of the Tivoli Tavern in the Old Market Place that Hewitt's took over the business of Charles Kennington in 1888. I have enjoyed reading Beer, Hope & Charity and I just wondered if during your research you came across the Kennington family?
I believe they had a shop in Caistor and also round the corner from my office in Bethlehem Street, Grimsby near the level crossing, now a local.
Hope to hear from you.
